As an IT Professional I’m often asked by small business owners about backups. Unfortunately over half the time it’s because the client has had a catastrophic data loss of some type and would like to know how to better protect themselves. The fact is most small businesses are so busy with the day-to-day operations of their business they rarely think about backing up their data until it is too late.
Unlike large businesses, most small businesses do not have a dedicated IT team to manage and monitor their backups. More than once I’ve been called to a business to by a frantic owner because their server has crashed, and my first question is do you have backups? Most of the time the answer is either “I don’t know” or “I think we have something”. We then find out that they were backing up to an external hard dive or tape and that the backup hasn’t been working in over six months. Since no one in the company is responsible for the server and checking on the backups, they had no clue their data wasn’t protected.
We always recommend to our clients a two tier backup approach. The first tier should be a reliable on-site solution and the second tier should be a managed off-site solution. Some people fear that off-site data backup is not secure or puts their data out in “The Cloud” somewhere for anyone to have access to. This is why it is important to know who is backing up your data. Here at Computer Peripherals Unlimited our backup software encrypts your data with military grade encryption before it leaves your server on a secure connection to our servers that are located here in Greenville, NC. We provide easy to use software that you can install and configure to back up your data. The software is automated and runs in the background to make sure your data is safe and protected. If you would prefer we can even manage your backups for you. The cost is minimal, but the peace of mind knowing your data is protected is priceless.
