NFL Quarterback David Garrard spent four years in Greenville playing for the ECU Pirates. Now, he’s coming back to help Beau’s Buddies Cancer Fund plan the David Garrard Celebrity Golf Classic. The biennial tournament, slated for June 23rd and 24th 2013 will be a high-profile community event and one you will not want to miss!
David called Greenville, NC home for his college years. He studied construction management while playing football for the ECU Pirates. During this time, he rewrote the school’s record books in four seasons as he finished with 60 touchdown passes and ran for 21 scores. He holds the school’s career record with 10,238 yards in total offense (second in Conference USA history), 666 completions (fourth), and 60 touchdown passes (third).
He was drafted in 2002 by the Jacksonville Jaguars and was selected to play in the Pro Bowl in 2010. He joined the Miami Dolphins in 2012 but was released due to an injury. He signed with the NY Jets in 2013 and will be competing for the starting quarterback position.
In addition to his career in the NFL, David is the proud father of three children and husband to Mary Garrard. David is fiercely committed to his faith, his family and his health. He established the David Garrard Foundation in honor of his mother who lost her battle to breast cancer when David was a boy. Today, the foundation supports families who are impacted by Breast Cancer and Crohn’s disease and develops programs that promote healthy, active lifestyles for children.
Now entering its 6th year, Beau’s Buddies Cancer Fund works to enrich the lives of those fighting cancer in Eastern North Carolina. Since its inception, the organization has raised over $400,000.00 to help support cancer patients at Vidant Medical Center. The organization was established in 2008 by a small, dedicated group of volunteer board members with big hearts who realized firsthand how difficult the battle against this devastating disease can be.
Greenville’s premier hospitality partners, operating the Hilton hotel, Villedge Wood-Fired Kitchen and Bar, and the Greenville and Raleigh Hampton Inn and Suites will be the presenting sponsors for this year’s event.
“Since 1973, Tom Glennon and his family have served the Greenville community in many businesses and have always had a strong philanthropic presence. As they celebrate their 40th year in business, we are honored to have them as the presenting sponsor for the David Garrard Celebrity Golf Classic benefiting our organization,” stated Jeff Gaddis, Chairman of Beau’s Buddies Cancer Fund.
“Our hospitality entities once lead by Nick Glennon, who lost his life battling renal cancer in 2006, have been associated with Beau’s Buddies and David Garrard since the beginning of their work in Greenville. Nick’s desire was always to give back to great causes that support the communities we serve as these communities have been supportive to our hospitality entities as we have grown. I know I can speak for all of our management and team members from the Hilton Greenville, Hampton Greenville, Hampton Inn and Suites Raleigh, Comfort Suites Cary and Villedge Restaurant that we are very proud of the work we continue to see by Beau’s Buddies Cancer Fund and The David Garrard Foundation and are humbled to be a part of it.
This two-day event will feature a long list of pro-athletes and celebrities and kicks off with a dinner and live auction on Sunday, June 23rd at the Greenville Hilton. Monday morning the community is invited to come watch the golf teams play at Greenville Country Club, meet the stars, get autographs and photos, and even play football with the pros.
