It took moving to five states, getting married, having kids and a twist of fate for Jeff Moore to launch his successful accounting practice in Greenville, Moore Business Solutions.
The long journey started in Ayden, where he graduated from Ayden-Grifton High School and resulted in corporate career moves across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, Indiana and Louisiana It came to end in 1997 when his wife, Ellen, took a job with Pitt County Schools as a special education teacher.
The Moore family was already discussing a move back to the Greenville area and happened to be on vacation with family here when Ellen learned from a friend the school system needed a special education teacher. Lacking any formal business clothes, she interviewed in a casual vacation outfit one August day and got the job, Jeff recalls.
The end result? A happier, more successful businessman.
“When I worked for companies, I could tell you exactly how many days to my next vacation. In 18 years, I’ve had seven 1 week vacations,” Jeff says, explaining when you work at something you enjoy, you don’t worry about the time off.
He got his first job with Owens Illinois’ corrugated container division after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After a training period in Salisbury, NC, where he and Ellen got married, then moved to Newberry, SC
Then came the promotions and moves to Atlanta and Kansas City , where their oldest daughter, Janet was born. Not done yet, he left Owens Illinois and went to work for another container company, who promptly moved the family to Durham, NC., where their second daughter, Allison was born. Then moves to Evansville, IN, and Louisiana happened.
“What I found my strength was at that time was that I became kind of a ‘MacGyver at figuring out problems to help keep things running,” he recalls, referring to the popular 1980s television private investigator Angus MacGyver.
Jeff says he held prestigious jobs as plant superintendent
and plant manager for these large firms, but something was lacking.
“I don’t have a ‘manager of a big group’ personality,” he says, adding doing a job that one is not comfortable with adds to stress levels and discomfort.
“The corrugated container industry is a commodity business where companies are forever buying and selling each other,” he explains.
“But, as a manager of a big company,” Jeff notes, “I realized how important accounting was as a performance measurement for business.“ He went on to earn his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and created forecasting tools during his studies that won him an award.
It’s no surprise then that Moore Business Solutions specializes in business accounting services, income tax preparation for business and personal filers, payroll services, financial consulting and Quickbooks Accounting Software support.
