According to the Centers for Disease Control and the American Heart Association (AHA) eating two servings of Omega-3 fatty acids each week will reduce the risk of heart disease, specifically coronary heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil promote cardiovascular health and help retain normal blood pressure and triglyceride levels. However, also according to the American Heart Association, some fish (and therefore fish oil supplements) contain high levels of mercury, PCBs, dioxins and other environmental contaminants.
Although the pharmaceutical industry is overseen by the FDA and is required to test for over 80 possible contaminants in its products, there is no such oversight by the FDA for the vitamin or “food supplement” industry. As a result, many companies are producing their products as cheaply and inexpensively as possible. The result is that well-meaning Americans, armed with only half the information needed to make the best choice for their health, swarm to store shelves to buy fish oil to improve their health, completely unaware that at the same time, they may be slowly poisoning themselves.
