At Christmas we often pause to consider memories of the year that has past and contemplate goals & dreams for the year ahead. On New Year’s we may even have a written list of resolutions. Our family has adopted a tradition we call “The Family Time Capsule”.
It is a unique twist on memories and New Year’s resolutions. Every year we place a large empty metal popcorn tin on the shelf in the hall closet. Family members place items inside the tin that are reminders of milestones in our lives throughout the year.
For example, when our daughter performed in a Smiles & Frowns production we placed a copy of the program in the time capsule. When our youngest son gave up his pacifier, we tossed it into the time capsule. We include favorite toys, newspaper clippings featuring family members, pictures of family, our cars, our pets, vacations and our house, etc.
Anyone in the family may place anything inside the time capsule that is a personal treasure and will fit inside the tin. Finally, each family member writes a letter to themselves to be read 10 years in the future when the time capsule is opened. The letter is about what their life is like now and their hopes & dreams for their life in the future!
This year, on New Year’s Day, we’ll seal the time capsule with duct tape and write “Do Not Open Until 2021” on the lid. When our family gathers together for the Holidays in 2021 (and every year) we will enjoy opening the “Time Capsule” from 10 years earlier to reveal all the treasures and memories inside including some very special letters from Christmas Past.
We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Blessed New Year!
