Can we talk? Do you want to be well? Achieving optimal health should be on everyone’s list. Sadly, however, we often take our health for granted – especially when we are “young.” For the most part we do not even consider optimizing our health until we are faced with an ailment or diagnosed with a dreaded disease. By then, however, it is often too late to turn back the clock.
My question for you this month is, “What will it take for you to be motivated towards wellness?” The reason I ask is because many choose to wait on the sidelines of life, just making it through day by day when there is so much more that life has to offer. Men, I’m talking to you right now.
The gals in our lives are standing by ready to follow our lead. Are you ready to step up to the plate?
Achieving and sustaining optimum health is not just a fanciful, wishful thought. It is a vital necessity if we don’t want to become a statistic.
Here are five primary areas that need our attention throughout our lives if we are to attain optimal health. These are:
1. Proper Nutrition
2. Physical Exercise
3. Proper Sleep
4. Proper Health Care
5. Mental and Spiritual Balance
Proper Nutrition is a good starting place. Do you eat to live or live to eat? In order to achieve optimal health one needs to stop eating those things that destroy and start eating those things that nurture. You know what the things that destroy are, but just in case… fast foods, sugar products, saturated fat, simple carbohydrates, sodas, chips and fried foods. The list goes on. Eating to live means that we eat on purpose, choosing those foods that provide long term benefits.
The human body is designed for activity. The American lifestyle is, for the most part, sedentary. We are not necessarily lazy: we simply have jobs that require limited physical activity, and when we are not on our jobs we are usually caught up in day-to-day activities that are also bereft of physical labor. To undertake and maintain an exercise program requires time and commitment. However, if you truly desire to obtain optimal health it is necessary to get the proper physical activity on a regular basis.
Getting proper sleep is vital. Most people need 7-9 hours of sleep to get the rest we need for our busy lifestyles. However, most people do not get nearly that amount of sleep. Insomnia or restless sleep can be caused from physical discomfort, too much late night eating or caffeine, an improper sleep surface, or possibly just a little too much worrying. If you do not get enough sleep you will suffer in every area of your life. Your body needs time to rest and restore. It is not wasted time. It is healing time.
Proper health care – preemptive and timely health care to be more specific is an important ingredient for optimal health and wellness. Men, I can not stress more the importance of staying on track – especially as you age – with annual exams, and preventative chiropractic care. Do whatever it takes to make and keep your health care appointments.
Maintaining a healthy mental balance is within your power if you are eating right, getting enough sleep, exercising and watching what goes into your mind. Spiritual balance provides the purpose for living. Knowing that you were not an accident – that you were made for a purpose – can be your strongest motivating factor in your quest for optimal health and wellness. Remember, you are unique – a masterpiece. There’s only one exactly like you.
Obtaining optimal health requires commitment men. Are you ready? The choice is yours. The rewards are waiting for you.
